Status in Italy
Since 1993 the Association for Research on Transplantation, sustains
research in the field of organ transplantation.
In Italy transplant organization is based on the National Transplantation
Centre (CNT) located by the National Health Institute, on three inter
regional coordination centres: North Italian Transplant (NIT); Inter
Regional Association for Transplantation (AIRT), Centro- Sud Transplant
Organization (OCST), and on twenty one regional coordination centres.:
• CNT
- Centro Nazionale Trapianti
• NITp
- Nord Italia Transplant program
• AIRT
- Associazione Interregionale Trapianti
• OCST
- Organizzazione Centro-Sud Trapianti
Every year transplants save thousands of people afflicted by terminal
disease. But the limited number of organs has created a dramatic disparity
between need and possibility for transplantation.
